NICCO has started emergency support in the area
affected by October 8th earthquake in Pakistan, as a
member of Japan Platform. We have decided to provide
tents, blankets and other daily necessities to the 1500
families in the villages near Balakot. The project has
been planned based on the survey by our staff dispatched
to the affected site, in accordance with the requests
and coordination by Pakistan government, United Nations
and other related organizations.
As the villages are situated in the mountainous area
where winter comes earlier than cities, the affected
residents face the urgent needs of shelters. Despite
the call by the Pakistan President to come down from
the mountains, many residents are likely to stay there,
because of livestock and other properties they own.
Under these circumstances, NGOs are requested to maintain
sufficient supports for the mountainous area.
The supposed obstacle is bad weather which would prevent cars
to get into the villages. Even on such condition, we must
distribute tents, about 70kg per each, as quicker as possible.
